Chai, the beloved beverage that tugs at every Indian’s heart. ‘
Growing up chai time was always something that I looked forward to, the aroma of that morning brew filled me with the energy that carried me through the day, while the warmth of the evening brew felt like a hug at the end of a long day. Perhaps it’s the sentiment that makes it so personal. As any immigrant who longs for home in a foreign land, chai is a convenient means to bridge that void. And no I’m not talking about chai lattes but rather our very own Indian chai which if you know, you know. And then there is something extra special to share that joy with somebody equally passionate about it. Unfortunately for me, my husband is a coffee person and we are always at odds for our evening snacking hunts, but as life has it, wife gets the way. On few occasions I also get to persuade some friends to join along for an evening cuppa, which honestly feels cathartic.
Try out my personal recommendations below!
1. Chai Waala Bhai
This little spot out in Sandringham runs from 5:00 in the evening to late night 1:00AM, perfect for a night escapade. They serve masala chai with more stronger notes on cardamom and ginger if thats your flavour.
2. Sarvanna Bhavan
Your regular go to for a good masala chai. With Sarvanna bhavan you know the flavour is tried and true, so you cannot be disappointed. (Although sometimes in the evening the chai can taste a bit flat)
3. Salt Mango Tree/Kodur
If you are someone who grew up in a south indian houseshold, you are more likely drawn to enjoy a simple chai without any spices, rich in milk and sugar. This is honestly the closest it can get to that feeling.
4. V.T Station
This one falls on the pricier end. They serve their masala chai old style in traditional “ketli” supplementing it with a good day biscuit mirroring to what feels like a dhabha style serve. Pair it along with their iconic vada pav to get the full dhabha experience.
5. Choolaah
Located at the heart of Auckland’s CBD, this spot is perfect if you are strolling around Queens Street or if you live there. There is an option to get their masala chai served in a “kulhad” a twist to the ordinary! Plenty of snacking options too!
